The remnants of Typhoon Halong slammed into western Alaska’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, causing catastrophic, record-setting coastal flooding and hurricane-force winds up to 100 mph that swept away homes and caused widespread damage.

State and federal agencies, including the Coast Guard and National Guard, rescued more than 50 people, some from rooftops, from communities such as Kwigillingok and Kipnuk.

One person was confirmed dead and two others remain missing as Governor Mike Dunleavy expanded a disaster declaration for the remote region. Watch a video report here.

Officials are warning that the recovery, complicated by severe infrastructure damage and power outages, will be prolonged as winter nears.
