THE FLYOVER – President Trump announced Tuesday that his administration plans to “wean” states off Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance after the 2025 hurricane season and direct disaster relief funds directly to states instead.
Gov. Josh Stein warned that eliminating FEMA or reducing its role could harm public safety and recovery efforts in North Carolina, which is frequently hit by hurricanes and suffered its most destructive storm on record when Helene hit last September.
Trump, however, said responding to natural disasters is “what you have governors for. They’re supposed to fix those problems.”
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, also co-chair of the FEMA Advisory Council, said a council will be created over the next few months to work on reforms that will empower governors to respond to state emergencies.
