THE NORTH CAROLINA FLYOVER – State Senate and House Republicans spent most of Tuesday overriding eight of 14 vetoes issued by Gov. Josh Stein, enacting the bills into law. There’s no immediate deadline for overriding the remaining vetoes.

Two bills that will become law enforce efforts to counter illegal immigration: the Criminal Illegal Alien Enforcement Act (HB 318) and the North Carolina Border Protection Act (SB 153).

Other overridden vetoes create laws that expand the Charter Schools Review Board’s power (SB 254) and allow private school leaders to authorize teachers, parents, or volunteers to carry guns on campus for security purposes (HB 193). The Freedom to Carry NC Act (SB 50), allowing permitless concealed carry for adults 18 and up, also passed the Senate and is now law.

Also set to become law are the Power Bill Reduction Act (SB 266), the Personal Privacy Protection Act (SB 416), and the Prevent Sexual Exploitation/Women and Minors Act (HB 805).

Republicans hold a supermajority in the Senate but are one seat shy of a supermajority in the House. Keep up with future legislative activity via the General Assembly dashboard.
